John Basilone Day

Gy Sgt John Basilone Day was originally celebrated in 2002 at the American Legion in Arlington, VA. The United States Marine Corps supported Basilone and many cities and states passed legislation denoting 19 February as GySgt John Basilone Day. Basilone was celebrated as a way to impress upon the United States Post Office to issue a GySgt John Basilone Stamp. Stamps honoring Gy Sgt John Basilone along with General Lewis "Chesty" Puller, Sgt Major Dan Daly and General John LeJeune was issued on 10 November 2005. Currently, every 19 February the Gy Sgt John Basilone Award for Courage and Commitment is given to an outstanding member of the United States Marine Corps.
